Meredith Meeker
I grew up in the heart of the largest city in Canada. I may not have been surrounded by wilderness growing up, but I had a library card, and a mom who was more than happy to supply me with all manner of books on cool and rare animals.
I’m not sure when I realized that the animals in my books were disappearing from our planet, but I remember not understanding how it was possible. Didn’t everyone realize that all life had value, and that certainly the golden lion tamarin had just as much a right to have a home as my family?
Basically, what I am trying to say is that seven-year-old Meredith knew she would be working to save animals, and to fight against the biodiversity crisis, even if she didn’t know that’s what it was called.
It may have taken me awhile to find my youthful righteousness again, but I know how I want to spend my life. I want to make Ontario a better place for wildlife. I want to make sure that endangered species have a place to live and thrive in Ontario. I know these are big goals, lofty doesn’t even really capture them, but if we want to move the needle, we have to believe it’s possible.
